Meet the Maker: The Wired Hippie

Meet the face behind The Wired Hippie, Brooke Dunaway! Brooke is a jewelry maker based in Auburn, AL. Her business started in 2020 during quarantine as a way to stay busy, but the response was so positive she started selling her designs and the business took off from there. Fun fact: She may look familiar because Brooke also works at The Maker and Merchant!

How did you come up with your business name?

"Wired" because my first pieces were made of wire, like my wire rings, earrings and name necklaces. "Hippie" because of my style and long hair!

Tell us about your products/merchandise

I make wire and crystal and gemstone jewelry. My most popular items at the moment are my gameday pieces and my gemstone rings! I just started making custom name wire necklaces that I'm really excited about!

What is your favorite part about owning a small business?

I love seeing people wear the jewelry I make and hearing that my customers receive compliments on my pieces! I also enjoy designing unique pieces that fit my personal style and being able to work hours that fit my schedule is a definite perk!

What has been your biggest challenge and biggest success?

Finding new places to sell my jewelry in person is always a challenge as well as learning to balance my time! Being in The Maker and Merchant has been a big success because it has brought customers in to shop my jewelry that wouldn't have known about my shop otherwise.

What is one thing you wish you knew before starting your small business?

That it is a full time job! Even when you're not working, you're still not off the clock! There are also a lot of legal things that go into owning a business that can be confusing. I'm still trying to get the hang of it!

What is the best piece of advice you would give someone aspiring to start their own small business?

To just go for it! Make sure it is something you are passionate about, but it is so worth it!

What are your goals for your business moving forward?

I want to have my own website and to have my jewelry featured in several local boutiques! I would also like to expand my business to things outside of jewelry!

Where all do you currently sell?

You can find The Wired Hippie at University Station on Saturdays during football season, on Etsy and of course in The Maker and Merchant! Stay updated on her designs and sales
