Meet The Merchant: 29 and Holding Boutique
Updated: Dec 8, 2020
Meet Angie & Kristen! They are the owners of 29 and Holding Boutique; a local online boutique based in Smiths, AL featuring women's clothing, jewelry and shoes. To kick off our Meet The Merchant series, we asked the owners a few questions to help you get to know their business!
These two hard working ladies are full time teachers, mamas and entrepreneurs with great style. We can't wait to share their story with you.
What led you to start your business?
We are teachers who really like boutique clothes! So much of the inventory in the boutiques in our area catered to a younger crowd. We knew the styles we like existed because we could find a few in the stores, but not many. So we went on a mission to find the styles we liked to market to other teachers and our friends.
How did you come up with your business name?
Our name started as kind of an inside joke. Long before we thought of opening a store, one of us asked a student where she got a cute jacket and she replied “Forever 21”. One of us joked that we couldn’t shop there, we needed “29 and Holding”. When we talked about starting the business, we just decided to go with that!
What is your favorite part about owning a small business?
We love it when returning customers tell us that they’ve received compliments on the clothes they have purchased from us. We also love meeting new customers who have been referred to us by our “regulars.”
What is the biggest challenge you have faced as a small business?
Neither one of us have sales or marketing experience...so just learning how to get your business name out to potential buyers has been challenging. We sell at many vendor fairs and just finding out who is hosting them and how to get your business included has been a learning experience!
What has been your biggest success?
We are really excited to be in The Maker and Merchant and see our ”piece” of the store!
What is one thing you wish you knew before starting your small business?
You need to research all the legal requirements for owning a business in your state. We didn’t have any problems, there was just more paperwork and registering to be done than we originally knew about! I wish we had someone to help us know what steps to take when we first got started.
“If you have found something you love and are passionate about, just do it.”
What is the best piece of advice you would give someone aspiring to start their own small business?
Just do it! If you have found something you love and are passionate about, just do it.
What are your goals for your business moving forward?
We would love to continue to see it grow, and maybe even have our own storefront one day!
